There are some things children do not need to have explained to them in order to feel them.

No one needs to say out loud that there is tension at home.

Children hear it.

They feel it.

They live within it.

Even when parents try not to argue in front of them, even when everything seems quiet - children can still pick up on what is happening around them.

Many parents ask themselves:

How do children experience tension at home? And how much does conflict between parents really affect them?

What Tension at Home Looks Like Through a Child’s Eyes

Signs That a Child May Be Affected by Tension at Home

Children may not always understand exactly what is happening.

But they understand when something does not feel calm.

They notice:

  • Changes in tone of voice

  • Long silences

  • Looks exchanged between parents

  • Tension in the atmosphere

They do not need to know the details to feel that something is wrong.

What Happens Inside a Child

When there is ongoing tension at home, a child can become increasingly alert to what is happening around them.

This may look like:

  • Difficulty relaxing

  • Increased sensitivity

  • Fear of making mistakes

  • Trying to “keep the peace”

Sometimes, children try to be “better behaved” because they do not want to add any more tension.

And sometimes, they simply withdraw.

How the Impact Can Change With Age

Younger Children

Younger children may not understand what is happening between their parents, but they can still experience a sense of insecurity.

They feel the atmosphere even when they cannot explain it.

Older Children

Older children may begin trying to understand and interpret what is happening.

Sometimes, they may also take on emotional responsibility for the situation at home - feeling that they need to help, protect someone or keep the peace.

Why Ongoing Tension at Home Matters

Home is supposed to be a place where children can feel safe.

When tension becomes ongoing, a child’s body can learn to stay on alert.

It is not only about what is happening in the moment.

It is also about what the child may begin to internalise about safety, relationships and emotional security.

An Important Distinction

This does not mean that every argument between parents harms children.

Conflict is a natural part of relationships.

What matters is how that conflict happens, and what happens around it.

Can disagreements happen without fear, humiliation or ongoing hostility?

And after conflict, do children also get to experience calm, repair and reconnection?

Seeing that relationships can move from conflict back to safety is important too.

A Question to Reflect On

When there is tension at home, how can it be felt?

And are there also moments when your child gets to see how you return to calm?

In Summary

Children do not need to understand everything that is happening between their parents to be affected by it.

They live within the atmosphere.

And that atmosphere communicates more than we sometimes realise.

The ability to pause, notice what is happening and begin to see the situation through a child’s eyes can already be the beginning of change.
